Forced Guinea Pig’ism for the Good of Society « LewRockwell.com Blog

The American Medical Association Journal of Ethics has an article positing mandatory participation in clinical vaccine trials. Volunteers for these trials have declined substantially over the years. The article states low compensation as a primary reason, leaving students and the unemployed as the primary guinea pigs. So what is they answer to increase participation in vaccines and medicines that may or may not work, or have severe side effects? Mandatory volunteers! The authors have the gall to compare compulsory participation in medical experiments to jury duty. Look, I’m 100% against compulsory jury duty and I do whatever I can to avoid it, but comparing sitting in a jury box for a week or two to getting a shot or taking a pill and not know what the hell will happen to you is absurd. Yet, this article is published in a prestigious medical journal.

Look for this to creep in as an amendment to ObamaCare, lobbied heavily by Big Pharma and the neo-Nazi, nanny, busybody health bureaucrats.

Mobile phone users suffering from text neck – Telegraph.

Ailments are like products in the medical profession. You always have to come up with something new to sell to your patients. Text neck sounds just like one of those new products.

Denmark Introduces ‘Fat Tax’ on Foods High in Saturated Fat – ABC News

Denmark Introduces ‘Fat Tax’ on Foods High in Saturated Fat – ABC News.

It was bound to happen. All it takes is one country, state or city to start the ball rolling. Look for it to spread across Europe and cities across America.

The government’s definition of healthy food is not the same as mine.

Jags say goodbye to Garrard; McCown now QB | News | NFL.com

Jags say goodbye to Garrard; McCown now QB | News | NFL.com.

This was a shock when I saw it flash across the screen while watching ESPN. It’s rare to drop your starting quarterback less than a week before the beginning of the season.

No reason was given but they will save $9 million in salary cap. Also, it appears they want to get Blaine Gabbert ready to lead the team sooner than expected. ESPN’s John Clayton says Luke McCown will start for the first 8 weeks or so until the bye week, then Gabbert will take over. I say it might be even sooner if McCown chokes. They open against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, and that’s no walk in the park.

What makes this move even more fascinating is the future of head coach, Jack Del Rio. He is on the hot seat and will probably be fired if the Jags do not make the playoffs. Del Rio and the Jags management obviously see Gabbert as their future franchise quarterback, but they are taking a big gamble dumping Garrard right before the season opener.

Look, Garrard is a good quarterback, not a great one, but a good one. He’s been to the playoffs and the Pro Bowl but he is injury-prone and getting older. The Jags probably thought he wasn’t worth the $9 million and decided to cut their losses and take a shot with McCown and Gabbert. Maybe Del Rio will stay on another year even if they don’t make the playoffs if Gabbert plays well enough in the second half of the season.

Either way, I’m picking the Titans to win Sunday.

Why Legalize Now?

Why Legalize Now? – Mark Thornton – Mises Daily.

Legalize everything is my motto. I’m optimistic that drug legalization is finally getting a serious debate and we may see true legalization in my lifetime.

I find it ironic that while drug legalization is gaining steam, smoking bans are increasing all across the country, and the world.

The Office Can Make You Fat

Jun 04 2011 Published by under Health and Fitness, Motivation

You walk in the office and in the break room is a tray full of donuts, pastries, croissants and bagels. Oh boy! You know it’s so bad for you but you grab one anyway with your coffee. Later that afternoon, it’s someone’s birthday and it’s cake for everyone! Ugh! The office is a dietary disaster.

An article in the Daily Mail gives tips for avoiding the temptation. The article quotes a professor from the University of Bristol saying it’s hopeless. Humans are “biologically programmed to eat what’s put in front of us.” But all is not lost, the professor then says, “…the truth is, some of us are better at saying no than others.”

There’s the answer. Just say no. If you are already on a low-carb diet, then saying no is easy. You know you are not going to eat a donut or bagel no matter how tasty it is. You know it is not healthy for you. Even if having one, “won’t kill you,” you won’t succumb.

It’s more difficult to say no during family gatherings, but at the office, you’re under no obligation to indulge. Just say no. Just yesterday in my office break room there was a tray full of rich, gooey, freshly-baked fudge brownies for the taking. I love brownies, but I eat low-carb so there was no way I was going to take one, and I didn’t. I poured a big cup of strong, black coffee and walked back to my office.

You can do the same. The article made it appear that it’s nearly hopeless to escape from the sugary, carb-loaded treats. You’re will power is much stronger than you realize. You can say no.

Is Sugar Toxic? Yes, I believe it is.

Apr 23 2011 Published by under Goals, Health and Fitness

There’s a wonderful article in last week’s New York Times Magazine entitled, “Is Sugar Toxic?” It’s based on a lecture given by Robert Lustig in May, 2009 called “Sugar: The Bitter Truth.” The article and video are well worth a read and view.

Low-carb advocates have known about the deleterious effects of sugar for decades. I’ve been on a low-carb diet for three weeks now and I feel fantastic. I’ve done this before but have fallen off the wagon many times. The lure of bread, pasta, rice and pastries was too great but now I’m determined to stay on it. I’m disciplining myself more than I ever have before.

Give it a try if you haven’t already. You may be surprised how well you will feel in a very short period of time. If you can’t give up the carbs just yet, try eliminating sugar and high fructose corn syrup first. It will go a long way in improving your health.

Book Review: A Course in Weight Loss

Feb 06 2011 Published by under Goals, Health and Fitness, Motivation, Success

A Course in Weight Loss: 21 Spiritual Lessons for Surrendering Your Weight Forever, by Marianne Williamson

I was hesitant to write a review of this book, not because it was bad, but because it was written for women. There is no specific mention of the book’s target audience on the back cover, but within the first few pages, its specificity is quite clear.

The book takes a different approach to weight loss. There are no diet plans and exercise routines. It contains 21 spiritual lessons to guide you in your journey. It was actually refreshing to read a weight loss book that focuses on the mental aspects rather than the physical. That’s not to say you can lose weight sitting on your rear end all day long.

The primary focus is twofold: learning to love yourself and your body, and readjusting your relationship with food. Those are noble goals and should be the first thing you do when wanting to lose weight. Changing your mindset is paramount before engaging in any type of diet or exercise program.

Marianne Williamson encourages digging into your past to unlock your bad relationship with your body and food. Through meditation, prayer and journal writing, you can retrain your thoughts and tap into what she calls your “Divine perfection.” This is the notion that, as creations of God, we are already perfect. It is our own thoughts and actions that moves us away from perfection.

I admire Marianne’s candor in talking about her own struggles with weight loss and the personal ordeals she went through in her childhood.

This is a good book to start for women who are having a hard time, mentally dealing with their bodies and struggling to lose weight. It can help them channel their thoughts and energy towards their goal, and then begin the physical process of diet and exercise.

When it comes to changing your life, it always starts with your mind.

Book Review: The Power of Intention

Nov 07 2010 Published by under Goals, Health and Fitness, Motivation, Success

A disclaimer is warranted: Hay House sent me a copy of Wayne Dyer’s Power of Intention to review after I replied to an offer for bloggers to review their books. I am not paid to review this, but I did receive a free copy of the book.

I’ve been familiar with Dr. Dyer for many years but never read any of his books until several years ago when The Power of Intention was released. I initially saw his program on PBS and that prompted me to buy the book. The book I am reviewing is the same book but redesigned as a colorful, softcover gift book. The content is the same. This will have been my third reading.

Dr. Dyer has written many books, but if you were to buy just one, this would be it. It encompasses nearly everything he has done up until this book, and its principle theme is carried into his later books. All of them are good, but this is the best, in my opinion. I may be biased as this was the first book of his I read.

The book’s title centers on intention from a spiritual standpoint. The traditional definition of intention is a strong desire and purpose with determination. However, in my opinion, intention can be a cop-out. You can intend all you want, but if your desire and determination is not strong enough, nothing will happen.

Dyer moves intention to the spiritual side by saying that intention is a source of energy in the universe that can be accessed at anytime. When we tap into intention, we become inspired. We use the power of intention to co-create the life we want. We become disconnected with intention by our ego. By working to weaken the ego and focus your thoughts to eliminate limitations, concessions, and negativity, the energy of intention opens up to you.

It is a variation on the Law of Attraction, made famous in the movie, The Secret. A lot of people think it’s hokum but millions believe in it. I do. There is an energy in the universe. Whether it can be proved with quantum physics is debatable but billions believe in the existence of God without scientific proof. Let’s face it, there are innumerable aspects of the universe we simply cannot prove or disprove. Belief and faith are all we have.

Dyer progresses through the book with stories and anecdotes. If you’ve seen his shows on PBS, then you know what kinds of stories are in the book. At the end of each chapter, there are several exercises to get you to change your thought process and open up the power of intention.

I enjoy Dyer’s prose. It is very meditative. I enjoy reading him when I wish to calm my mind. In a certain sense, reading Dyer is like connecting with intention. I recommend the book for first-time Dyer readers and veterans of his work. There’s always something to glean from his writings.

Age is Just a Number

Sep 25 2010 Published by under Goals, Health and Fitness, Motivation, Success

Today is my 41st birthday. Do I feel 41? I don’t know. What are you supposed to feel? Old? Tired? I should hope not! Isn’t 40 the new 30 or something like that?

I will say that time is flying by, or at least it feels like it. The last 20 years have been a blur. Ask me to recall memories of the past 20 years and I’ll be hard pressed to come up with something on the spot. However, ask me about the 10 years prior and I’ll regale you with vivid stories of the glorious 1980s. It’s not that there were plenty of great memories in the last 20 years. Life’s been pretty damn good! There are always ups and down, but more ups than downs! It’s just that my teenage memories are much more vivid. I suppose that’s natural, or maybe it’s just me! What do you think?

The point is to forget about your age.  Don’t let it depress you, it’s just a number. We’re all living longer and there’s so much to live for. Whether you’re sitting pretty or sitting in the dump, tomorrow can always be better. Better yet, right now can always be better! It’s up to you.
