It’s the out Obama was looking for. You have to wonder if Obama ever wanted to follow through with another war. He knew it was unpopular with the American people, yet he had to stand his ground after the “red line” speech. Yes, he now denies the red line quote, saying “the world” did it. Yeah, right. Every one knows he said it and he has to come clean.
He wisely gave the decision to attack Syria to Congress, as is constitutionally required. I was shocked at first, but realized later it’s an entirely political ploy. It gives him an out if they vote no, even thought Obama said he could bomb them anytime he wants without approval. He won’t do it.
Senator Harry Reid as delayed the strike vote pending a Russian proposal to have Syria hand over its chemical weapons to international control. The latest response is Syria will do just that.
Indications are there will be no war with Syria. This will upset the neocons to no end but there is no security threat to the U.S. to justify war. Obama is going to great pains saying it would be a short, surgical strike. It’s war, no matter what you call it.
Interesting thought experiment… If Congress did approve, would it be a declaration of war, as the Constitution requires, or approval for a surgical strike? I think I know the answer to that…
