Your Associations

Nov 16 2009

Jim Rohn‘s weekly email had an article on who you associate with and how your associations affect your life. Who you hang out with can greatly determine how you live your life. He says that if you associate yourself with people who spend all of their money, chances are good that you will also spend all of your money. If you associate yourself with negative people, you will probably have a negative attitude yourself. It is quite difficult to stay positive when you are surround by negative people.

I’ve recently begun evaluating who I associate with. Jim Rohn suggests asking, “What are these associations doing to me?…What have they got me doing? What have they got me listening to? What have they got me reading? Where have they got me going? What do they have me thinking? How have they got me talking? How have they got me feeling? What have they got me saying?” Is it good or bad? Are your associations negatively affecting your ability to achieve your goals? Are your associations affecting time with your family?

Evaluate your associations and determine if changes are needed. You may not be able to completely disassociate yourself from a negative person, especially at work or even family, but you can try to lower the time spent with him or her. There are people you can completely disassociate from and you should if they are providing a negative influence. We should all try to associate with people who bring a positive influence to us. That isn’t always possible but we should strive for more positive people in our lives.
